How did illegal tobacco lose one landlord his freedom and his license?
A pub boss who sold thousands of pounds-worth of stolen booze
and fake cigarettes from behind his bar was jailed and had his pub
license revoked.
Glenn Peach, 43, was caught when police raided The White Horse
in Quarry Lane, South Shields, and found almost £7,000 of stolen
whisky and about £6,000 of counterfeit Regal King Size
cigarettes.
The cigarettes were convincing copies, but contained
higher-than-normal levels of nicotine and carbon monoxide. Both
were being sold over the counter at the pub.
Peach, who said he began selling the illegal stock after his
business started to suffer due to the recession and the smoking
ban, admitted handling stolen goods and possession and distribution
of counterfeit cigarettes with intent to supply.
Not only did Peach receive an 18-month jail sentence for his
part in the scam, but he also had his pub license revoked.
