West Yorkshire police and trading standards uncover a haul of
illegal tobacco in Bradford after local residents raise concerns
over suspicious youths.
Residents alerted authorities after noticing regular suspicious
activity near some playing fields, where youths were hiding large
cardboard boxes in hedges before moving them into white vans.
As a result of enquiries into these reports, trading standards
tracked one of the transit vans and uncovered a large quantity of
illegal tobacco including 32,000 cigarettes and 4.5kg of
hand-rolling tobacco.
Four males were arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods
and further enquiries revealed that the tobacco and cigarettes were
counterfeit. Enquiries in relation to this matter are ongoing.
This case highlights how criminals are using youths from within
the community to act as 'runners' and 'lookouts' for their illegal
operation.
