How are local authorities tackling illegal tobacco?
Local authorities in Yorkshire & Humberside launched a major
joint operation to seize thousands of counterfeit cigarettes and
huge quantities of hand-rolling tobacco.
'Operation Apus 2' was set up between Scambusters,
trading standards, HM Revenue & Customs and the police
following the success of a previous operation in December 2008.
The operation targeted individuals and addresses across the
region suspected of taking delivery of significant quantities of
counterfeit cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco.
The operation proved to be a huge success, with approximately
25,000 counterfeit cigarettes, 80kg of illegal leaf tobacco and
thousands of pounds in cash - believed to be the proceeds of the
illegal trade - seized by police.
Dave Gostelow, a spokesperson for HMRC, said: "This is one of
the first fully-integrated illicit tobacco operations in the North
of England and HMRC are very pleased with the preliminary
results."
