Tobacco smugglers jailed over ports plot
Gary Woodroof, 51, and Daniel Parman, 49, both of Essex,
were caught following a HM Revenue & Customs operation which
uncovered a number of hauls, including 1.9 tonnes of hand-rolling
tobacco which was smuggled into Immingham in bags of charcoal from
South Africa.
The operation found the pair had illegally brought 11 million
cigarettes, 5 tonnes of hand-rolling tobacco and thousands of
litres of wine into the UK through various ports - avoiding
£6-million in duty.
On sentencing the men, His Honour Judge Peter Fenn said: "This
was highly and professionally organised smuggling using a variety
of methods and routes."
Woodroof was jailed for nine-and-a-half years while Parman was
jailed for 10 years.
